Bob Tway became the first player in modern history to win the PGA Championship with a birdie on the 72nd hole when he holed a shot from a greenside bunker. The Tour sophomore began the final round four strokes behind Greg Norman, who led the first three rounds. Tway, who shot a third-round Championship record-tying 64, caught Norman on the back nine, shooting a closing 1-under-par 70 to the Australian’s 76. Club professional Lonnie Nielsen of East Aurora, N.Y., tied for 11th at 284.
