Raymond Floyd opened the tournament on a broiling day with a blistering 7-under-par 63 and led for the remainder of the Championship, winning by three strokes over Lanny Wadkins. It was Floyd’s second PGA Championship. The 39-year-old set the PGA Championship record of 132 for 36 holes, 200 for 54 holes and tied the 18-hole record of 63.
