Lionel Hebert won the final PGA Championship conducted at match play, defeating Dow Finsterwald, 3 and 1, at Miami Valley Golf Club in Dayton, Ohio. It was the second consecutive Championship contested with a 128-player field. In the finals, neither Hebert or Finsterwald enjoyed larger than a 1-up advatage. Hebert’s momentum turned at the 32nd hole when he made a 15-foot birdie putt to go 1-up. Each player matched birdies the next two holes before the 34th when Finsterwald hit into a creek in front of the green and failed to make par, boosting Hebert’s lead to 2-up. With a routine par at the 35th hole, Hebert closed out the match, earning the $8,000 check.
