A 36-hole qualifying round to get into match play was conducted the Monday and Tuesday before the Championship. Defending PGA Champion Johnny Revolta was exempt and 63 players qualified. Fay Coleman was low qualifier with 143. A score of 155 qualified for match play, and eight players at 156 competed in a playoff for seven spots.

Notable players who didn’t make it to match play were Walter Hagen (157), Leo Diegel (157), Sam Parks Jr. (157), Byron Nelson (158) and Jim Turnesa (159). The first and second rounds were 18 holes played in one day, with the remaining matches being played at 36 holes.

In the finals, Shute played David to Thomson’s Goliath. Outdriven by as much as 60 yards on many holes, Shute used his irons and his putter to turn back Thomson, 3 and 2. In the morning round, Thomson shot 77 to Shute’s 74, but Shute only had a 1-up lead. After the front side of the afternoon round, Shute still maintained his 1-up lead, and started to pull away with a 30-foot birdie putt at the 29th hole. Despite a 2-up lead, Shute struggled with every aspect of his game, except his putting. On the 31st hole, Shute hit a poor drive in the waste area and scuffed his next shot short of the green. Thomson hit his second shot on the green. Shute pitched up 20 feet away, and after Thomson safely secured his par, Shute made his putt for a half. The next two holes were halved with pars, and Shute closed out the match on the 34th hole, when he hit a spectacular second shot, three feet away on the par-5 hole. When Thomson missed his putt for birdie, Shute knocked his putt in for eagle, a 3-and-2 victory and the Championship.
