A 36-hole qualifying round was conducted the Tuesday before the Championship. Defending PGA Champion Olin Dutra was exempt from qualifying, and Mortie Dutra and Jimmy Hines were the low qualifiers with 138. A score of 146 qualified for match play. Notable players who didn’t qualify were Jim Foulis (148), Billy Burke (148) and Ralph Guldahl (150). Walter Hagen, Craig Wood and Denny Shute decided to not enter the event. All matches played at 36 holes.

In the finals, Sarazen had a lot to prove to people. Earlier in the week, Tommy Armour had said that Sarazen was “all washed up as a championship contender.” The remark lit a spark in Sarazen, who spent the whole week routing his competitors. After the morning round he was only 1-up on Goggin, despite a 1-under-par 69. Sarazen went to work in the afternoon, winning three of the first five holes, shooting 34 and going into the final nine 4-up. With a birdie on the 32nd hole, Sarazen closed out the match, 5 and 4. As he was receiving his prize of $1,000 and the Wanamaker Trophy for the third time, he told the audience, “Pretty good for a washed-up golfer.”
