11th PGA Championship
A 36-hole qualifying round was conducted the Monday before the Championship. Al Espinosa was the low qualifier of 32 players with 142. A score of 160 qualified for match play. One notable player who didn’t qualify in his local district was the U.S. Open winner Johnny Farrell. All matches were played at 36 holes.
In the finals, Espinosa’s putting touch deserted him. He got off to a good start when he won the second hole, and it looked as if he would also win the third, but a three-putt stopped that. Espinosa won the sixth hole, but Diegel made up the ground with two birdies in a row. He played brilliantly on the back nine, and at the end of the morning round was 4-up. Espinosa hung on during the first nine of the afternoon round but was unable to cut down Diegel’s lead. The 28th hole was halved, but Espinosa three-putted the next two and the match ended on the 31st hole with Diegel winning, 6 and 5.
